Aftercare
HAIR EXTENSION AFTERCARE — VIOLA CANADA 🇨🇦
Proper aftercare makes a huge difference in how long extensions stay smooth, soft, and secure. These guidelines will help you protect both your extensions and your natural hair.
WASHING
• Gently detangle hair before washing
• Keep your head upright to avoid tangling at the root
• Massage the scalp lightly — avoid rubbing or twisting
• Avoid applying conditioner directly to the beads or attachment area
• After washing, squeeze out excess water and pat dry — do not wrap hair tightly in a towel
Shampoo and conditioner should be extension-safe, moisturizing, and free of drying ingredients.
BRUSHING & DRYING
• Never brush extensions while wet
• Use an extension-safe detangling or bristle brush
• Start at the ends and work up while supporting the bonds with your hand
• Blow-dry on a medium setting instead of letting hair air-dry at the root attachment area
STYLING + HEAT USE
• Extensions can be curled, straightened, and blow-dried
• Excessive heat will shorten the lifespan of any hair — just like natural hair
• Avoid letting heat tools touch the bonds directly
• Always use a heat protectant
A light oil or serum may be used on the mid-lengths and ends only.
COLOURING
Chemical services (bleaching, colouring, toning, etc.) can weaken extension hair and create unpredictable results. Any colouring should be done with caution by a professional — and may reduce longevity.
SLEEPING
• Extensions must be completely dry before bed
• Brush hair and secure it in a braid or low ponytail to prevent tangling
SWIMMING, SUN, & TRAVEL
Exposure to chlorine, salt water, and minerals may cause dryness or colour changes — especially in blondes. UV exposure can also alter tone and reduce shine.
Tips:
• Tie hair up to keep it out of water
• Rinse and wash hair as soon as possible after swimming
• Protect hair from sunscreen contact — oils and chemicals can cause discolouration
• Wear a hat or scarf in strong sun
DISCOLOURATION NOTES
Blonde extensions are more vulnerable to environmental colour shifts (peach, green, brassy, pink) due to:
• Minerals in water
• UV exposure
• Chlorine + salt water
• Sweat
• Hair products
• Heat + chemical interaction
This is normal and not product defect. Prevention and protection are key.
MAINTENANCE
Extensions should be moved up and checked regularly to:
• Protect the natural hair
• Keep bonds secure
• Reduce matting and tangling
• Maintain comfort and appearance
Most clients require tightening or maintenance appointments every 6–12 weeks depending on method, hair growth, and lifestyle.
LONGEVITY
Extension lifespan varies from client to client based on:
• Colour
• Maintenance schedule
• Product use
• Heat styling
• Sleep habits
• Water quality
• Lifestyle
With attentive care and regular maintenance, extensions can last many months — often close to a year or more depending on the wearer.
